Five-time NCAA Division 2 champion Denisha Cartwright, a senior at Minnesota State representing the Bahamas who holds the division record in the women's indoor 60-meter hurdles at 7.93 seconds, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the 60-meter dash, 60 hurdles, 200 and 4x400 relay March 8-9 at the NCAA Division 2 Indoor Championships at the Plaster Center at Pittsburg State in Kansas. Cartwright, who ranks among the top 25 overall competitors in NCAA history, is looking to become the first female athlete in Division 2 indoor history to win three consecutive titles in the 60 hurdles. She is also attempting to become the sixth women's competitor in the division to capture three individual crowns in the same indoor championship meet. Cartwright reflects on becoming the first female athlete in Division 2 indoor history to eclipse the 8-second barrier in the 60 hurdles Feb. 24 at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships at Minnesota State's Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato. She also examines how much she has developed and improved since running 8.50 in the 60 hurdles to place second in the 2021 Division 2 indoor final, in addition to how she has evolved as a sprinter to elevate among the top five all-time indoor competitors in the division by clocking 7.23 in the 60 and 23.38 in the 200. Cartwright expresses gratitude for Minnesota State hurdles coach Chris Parno, as well as Mavericks' head coach Mike Turgeon, for their leadership, insight and guidance, in addition to the support of her teammates throughout her career. She also analyzes how valuable it has been to learn how to manage energy and emotions during NCAA championship meets, and how beneficial it has been to compete in multiple events at both indoor and outdoor finals in an effort to build momentum, both for herself and the Mavericks. Cartwright examines the matchup in the quest for the women's team title involving Minnesota State and Adams State, which will only rely on athletes competing in the 800, mile, 3,000, 5,000, 4x400 relay and distance medley relay. She also highlights the success during the winter season of Bahamian hurdlers, with Devynne Charlton capturing a gold medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Scotland by lowering her own world record with a 7.65 performance, in addition to Charisma Taylor running a personal-best 7.91 in the semifinals before placing sixth in the final, as well as her motivation to qualify with both athletes for the Paris Olympics in the 100-meter hurdles, looking to improve on her all-conditions personal-best 12.94 during the spring outdoor season.
