Ex-Olympic 1,500-Meter Champion Given Lifetime Ban for Third Doping Offense

By Adam Kopet

According to Sport24, Asli Cakir Alptekin has been given a lifetime ban from track and field for a third doping offense.

Cakir Alptekin received an eight-year ban for anomalies in her biological passport. As part of the ban, she was stripped of her 2012 Olympic 1,500-meter gold medal. She also lost her European 1,500 title. The ban was later reduced to four years and ended at the beginning of this year.

She received her first doping ban (two years) from a positive test at the 2004 IAAF World Junior Championships.

Cakir Alptekin competed in a European Champion Clubs Cup Cross Country event in Portugal in February this year. Her 11th-place finish helped her club, Uskudar Belediyespor, win the team title.

No details surrounding Cakir Alptekin's third doping offense have been released.
