Meet Recap - FACA Senior All-Star Meet 2016 - DyeStatFLPublished by
We were back at the good old ARP after about a week and a half hiatus for this year’s FACA Senior All-Star Meet! A nice cool morning to race a 5K, the seniors got the chance to run up The Wall for the last time. The day was kicked off at 8:00 am with the start of the girl’s race, in which FACA Team North runner and Yale commit (2nd in 4A) , Kayley Delay (Fletcher High School) ran 18:54 to get the win over Team East’s Samantha Folio (Holy Trinity Academy), who finished a very close second in 18:55. Samantha had finished 2nd in the State 1A Championship last time out. The two battled from start to finish, with Delay taking the race out in 5:34 for the first mile. Folio was in tow, matching Delay’s steps as the two were stride for stride as they separated from the rest of the pack early on. At the mile, Georgia Tech commit Hana Herndon (also Team East, Winter Park High School) was third in 5:49, who was then closely followed by the rest of the competitors. Though it wasn’t expected to see a state-leading performance, it wasn’t a particularly fast day for the girls, which could be for a number of reasons, such as the temperature, the race maybe being all about placement, or the fact that it’s almost Thanksgiving and these girls have been running since the summer. In other words, it’s been a long season and Foot Locker / NXN may be the more overriding goal to cap off the season. Team battles raged as the battle up front continued, and when it was all said and done, it was Coach Roy Harrison’s FACA Team West who emerged as the victors, led by HB Plant’s Nadia Stratton, who finished fifth overall in 19:04. Team East rounded up a second-place finish, Team North third, and Team South finished fourth in the field.

Much like the girls, battles raged on during the boy’s race, which featured Team West’s Evan Babatz (Fort Myers High School, USF commit) winning the race in 15:56. Team East’s John Cacciatore (Satellite High School) finished second overall in 15:59 followed by Team North’s Calum McFetridge (Buchholz High School), who finished in 16:00. The boys got out at a quick pace. Team South’s Antonio Martinez (St. Thomas Aquinas) led the main pack, bringing them through the mile at 5:00. With six guys at five minutes and the next 15 guys just nine seconds behind, the race was on. A lot of changes were made throughout the race, as Cacciatore led at the two-mile mark, and eventual winner, Babatz, was three seconds behind. “It was a great trip,” said Doug Butler, coach of Team East. “Four of the East guys have been on my team for 6 years so it was a lot of fun riding up together.” Butler said that the team ran under control today, as compared to some of the guys that went out at 4:42 at the state meet. “Today goal was to run as pack of six between 4:55-5:00. They came through right on pace altogether.” Teams jostled for positions and at the end of it all, it was Team East led by Cacciatore who prevailed. Team West finished second, Team North third, and Team South was fourth.
