Figure I’ll send you guys some workout results occasionally, as well as some evaluations from them and just get another set of eyes on my thoughts. Obviously I’m here watching it first-hand, but perhaps there’s still something to pick up on.

Brief bio on each kid:

Will… 800m… 1:53… very smooth, long legs

Eric… 400m/400h… 46-high/51h… shorter guy but powerful

Derrick… 800m… 2:10… very smooth, long legs… senior, last year was first year out for track after few years off

Tavares… 800m… 2:02… tall

Marcell… 400m… former LJ/TJ (24’6” in HS, was recruited by Rob Johnson to UCLA)… tore both quads couple years ago, now senior just trying to get back into running (won’t jump at all)

Chris… 100m/200m/400m… 10.7/47.5… short but powerful/smooth

Robert… 200m/400m… 48.5

Devon… 400m… 48.8… very weak and uncoordinated so far… from Bahamas

Joel Redhead… 200m/400m … 20.x/45.x … was on Granada national team last year… training this fall with us but no more eligibility

Asia… 400m/800m… 55.5r/2:09.5… also 1:33 in the 600m indoors… frosh from NY

Alex… 800m/1500m… 58.5/2:12/4:45… senior, seems unmotivated right now… real ‘tired’ looking

Workout 3x(2x300m)… 100m walk in 1min b/reps, 5min b/sets… goal time 51-54men / 57-60women

Will – 46/48, 44/46, 45/47

Eric – 49/51, 48/51, 50/53 … did first in each set w/2 hurdles on homestretch

Derrick – 51/49, 48/53, 49/50

Tavares – 51/50, 48/53, 49/51

Asia – 50/57, 54/56, 55/52

Alex – 51/58, 55/56, 55/52

These guys did it at 7pm in the complete dark due to classes:

Marcell – 51/50, 50/50, 49/49, 49/49

Joel – 51/50, 50/50, 49/49, 49/49

Chris – 54/52, 48/49, 47/48

Robert – 54/52, 48/49, 47/47

Devon – 54/52, 48/49, 48/49

I thought overall they did pretty well. Will was pushing more than I wanted him too as this was supposed to be more of a rhythm effort than pushing like I think he was. But he still maintained paces pretty well throughout. He did tell me right before the workout that “I just can’t run slower when I’m on the track. When I’m here, I just get in the mindset and gotta go.” He reminds me of Lopez… smooth, longer legs stride, fast enough to run sub 1:50 but not the kind of footspeed I’d expect to be able to run 46-47. (Early assumption.) Need to work on that because he could be dangerous in the 1500m/mile in this conference (it really falls off after the 800m), but he’ll need a lot of aerobic work. He says he’s a “sprinter-based” 800m runner… but I think that is only because he’s ever done sprinter-type workouts, not because what his body is really made to be doing.

Eric seemed to show signs fading between the first/second in each set. His assessment of needing more aerobic conditioning seems fair. He was running 47’s/51’s before… and looks like he’s still got a ton of room to improve in this area.

Derrick/Tavares both ran pretty steady workouts. Tavares is just goofy and I think his time is going to be mostly limited by his inefficiencies of his form. Derrick looks incredibly smooth and if his fitness catches up to what he looks like, 1:52-:54 should be a reality.

Asia is a big strong girl… Staci Bielenberg type w/big quads/butt, but a little leaner and with actual power in her stride… It seems like she’s only come from sprinting workouts, because she said the same thing as Will about being on the track and just wanting to roll rather than do much pace/rhythm stuff. Showed in her initial 50… she did settle down a little the rest of the way, though… and she seems very receptive to feedback, which is good. Excited to think of what is possible for her if she’s already running 55/2:09 out of HS and it appears she’s just a “run like hell and pray to hold on” type of runner. Tactics alone are going to make her that much better. Tactics and fitness… look out…

All the guys in the PM were much more controlled, probably a little out of necessity by running in the dark and that makes you go a little slower. Liked how their workout went, cutting down throughout. Not much to say about theirs, really.

WU/Wkt/MJ/MT/CD all took <1:45

Two main observations about today… first is strictly an observation, second has a question…

First… This group is very willing/open to listen. For being as talented as they are, and as much as they talk a bit about what they want to do… they don’t have such an ego that they won’t work. But they are RAW RAW RAW!!! Like first graders on their knowledge of what they need to do to become good or how hard to work. But they’re willing, thank goodness! Comment of the day by Chris... When I mentioned that “Cooling down each day is essential because putting away the bodies well today helps us bring them out nicely tomorrow.” … To which he replied, “Is that why we weren’t sore today after our workout and all that stuff yesterday?” … comment number 2 by him as well… “So all this general strength stuff is really going to help us get stronger and help our running?” (not in a ‘do I have to do this’ kind of way… but more like a ‘sweet keep bringing it!’ way).

Second… Main question I came up with after today is with regard to Will/Asia… on the balance of how much time do I spend working on getting them to learn rhythm and writing workouts toward their physiology vs. perhaps writing workouts a little more geared toward their mentality.
