Lauren Gale, a Colorado State All-American and Canadian indoor record holder in the 200 meters, 400 meters and 4x400-meter relay along with being selected to the national team roster last year for the Tokyo Olympics, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing July 17 in her first World Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Gale, who helped Canada finish eighth in the 4x400 relay March 20 in a national record 3:31.45 at the World Indoor Championships in Serbia, speaks about the opportunities to compete this year in Belgrade, along with at Hayward Field, as well as Aug. 5 and 7 at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England after not racing last year in Tokyo. She explains the unfortunate circumstances that resulted in her being ill during the NCAA West Regionals in Arkansas, forcing her to withdraw from competition and not advancing to the Division 1 championship meet in her final collegiate season. Gale, 22, reflects on being able to rebound June 24-25 at the Bell Canadian Track and Field Championships in Langley, British Columbia, and running 51.61 seconds to secure her place on the roster to compete in Eugene. along with her Ottawa Lions quartet running the fastest club 4x400 in her country's history at 3:35.46. She also revisits the Mountain West Conference Championships at Buchanan High in Clovis, Calif., and producing personal-best efforts of 22.82 in the 200 and 51.30 in the 400, and the confidence those performances have given her in preparation for her World Championships debut. Gale analyzes the Canadian 4x400 lineup scheduled to compete in Oregon, with Aiyanna Stiverne scheduled to replace veteran Sage Watson and join the trio of Kyra Constantine, Natassha McDonald and Gale that contributed to the national indoor record in Serbia. She also speaks about balancing training with her move from Fort Collins to Virginia and eventually to British Columbia for team training camp, and expresses gratitude for her family and all those who have supported her during the transition following her graduation.
